Scanners Live In Vain
05:14
|
|||
they gave their lives to science
to see what they could see
becoming an appliance
at one with technology
the years stand in defiance
to all that we achieve
and like all other giants
they were tossed into the sea
scanners live in vain
can you feel the pain
tell me what we gain
who will stop the rain
a game of rat and dragon
will lead you to defeat
so don't you go a-braggin
that you're in the driver's seat
you race your station wagon
down every deadend street
they simply drop the flag 'n
you will both be obsolete
(hidden verse)
stripped of all sense and feeling
beyond the sphere of sight
perceives a scanner darkly
above the speed of light
and through the halls of clown town
a dead lady could see
the hound who brought the walls down
instrumentality!
scanners live in vain
can you feel the pain
of the burning of the brain
tell me what we gain
like captain kirk in star trek
aboard the enterprise
surrounded by your high tech
fantasy without surprise
while jacking in your tape deck
you listen to these lies
and fizzle like kahoutec
like a comet in demise
scanners live in vain
can you feel the pain
tell me what we gain
who will stop the rain
who will stop the rain
tell me what we gain
can you feel the pain
scanners live in vain...

Mad Magazine
03:36
|
|||
i remember you
from my sixth grade science class
i lent you my mad magazine
you never gave it back
my mad magazine, my mad magazine,
my mad magazine, wont you give it back to me.
my mad magazine, my mad magazine,
my mad magazine, mad about my magazine.
the lighter side was great
and al's fold-in was first rate
it even had this cool send-up
of planet of the apes
my mad magazine, my mad magazine,
my mad magazine, wont you give it back to me.
my mad magazine, my mad magazine,
my mad magazine, mad about my magazine.
you'd been my best friend
up to that day - that's a fact
i probably woulda let it slide
if it had been a cracked
my mad magazine, my mad magazine,
my mad magazine, mad about my magazine.
my mad magazine, my mad magazine, my mad magazine,
won't you give it back, give it back, give it back to me...
bring back, bring back
oh, bring back my mad magazine to me
bring back, bring back
oh, bring back my mad magazine...

TV Temple
03:26
|
|||
well i wasn't there in dallas when the president was shot
and i wasn't there in saigon when the war was being fought
nor, sir, was i there at woodstock high on lsd or pot
or that campus in ohio when the facts of life were taught
i was bowing to an idol in the temple of my choice
man those cathode rays were glazin up my eyes
i was late for the recital cause i thought i lost my voice
when the words i spoke i didn't recognize
they were telling me the story of a life that passed me by
and a life ahead that i'll likely never see
for mine eyes have seen the glory
and mine eyes have seen the light
and mine eyes have seen it all on my tv.
i saw a film last tuesday at the bargain matinee
they tried to kill jim morrison or was it jfk
but i went out for some popcorn and i missed the q&a
if i saw it on my vcr i'd hit the pause-delay
now i'm was bowing to an idol in the temple of my choice
with those cathode rays reflecting in my eyes
i was late for the recital when i thought i lost my voice
cause the words i spoke i didn't recognize
they were telling me the story of a life that passed me by
and a life ahead that i may never see
for mine eyes have seen the glory
and mine eyes have seen the light
and mine eyes have seen it all on my tv.
i was hangin in my attic
when i heard a little static
through the airwaves as i listened
to my brand new television
some soap-opera, science-fiction,
mystery sit-comtradiction
when dan rather interrupted
with the news of some corrupted
old official from the white house
who was open as a doormouse
when the cat's away from trouble
you can count on it to double
but that's just the way it crumbles
i could hear dan rather grumble
underneath his medicine breath
as he had a vision of death
underneath the wheels of amtrak,
dragged for 15 miles and then back
till his head it splits right open
on the railway ties unspoken
but he quickly gained composure
for he feared overexposure
and he recapped all the main facts,
dan would rather fight than switch trax
mmmm mmmm mmmm....
i watched your final episode. how could i ever know
that my own ratings bottomed out and it would be my own?
the guest stars came pounding at my door: fred flintstone, norman leer
and even as the laugh track swelled, the white dot disappeared.
are you bowing to an idol in the temple of your choice
bet those cathode rays go lovely with your eyes
were you late for the recital when you thought you lost your voice
cause the words you spoke you didn't recognize
they were telling you the story of a life that passed you by
and a life ahead that you will never see
for your eyes have seen the glory
and your eyes have seen the light
and your eyes have seen it all on your tv.

i wanna marry the indigo girls

and i wanna marry the indigo girls
and i wanna marry the indigo girls

cowboy ed and his caterpillar
riding out cross the plains
watch 'em crawlin westward
rounding up all the aphids
cowboy ed can't complain
it's all in a days work
cowboy ed is glad to be of service
don't squish him. it makes only him nervous.
once upon a time in the west
ed was a normal-sized boy
who wanted to be a cowboy
something happened to shrink him
to the size of a bug
he didn't let that stop him
cowboy ed is glad to be of service
don't squish him. it makes only him nervous.
four score and seven years ago
our fathers brought forth on this
continent a new nation,
conceived in liberty and
dedicated to the proposition
that all men are created equal.
those old words that honest abe once said
still ring true even for cowboy ed
tune in next week, cowboy ed will fly
when his steed becomes a butterfly...

National Sport
02:58
|
|||
i walk in and out of life's every door
i'm thinking about where i been before
so don't take it bad i'll take all the blame
if i don't respond when you call my name
i hope for the best, expectin the worst
don't know if i'm blessed, or if i been cursed
i hope for the worst, expectin the best
don't know if i'm cursed, or if i been blessed
hopin' for the best is the national sport
say what you mean but hope for the best
i walk to the bar and order a drink
it's cheaper by far than any damn shrink
i stare at the glass divided by two
i don't know which half reminds me of you
i hope for the best, expectin the worst
don't know if i'm blessed, or if i been cursed
i hope for the worst, expectin the best
don't know if i'm cursed, or if i been blessed
hopin' for the best is the national sport
say what you mean but hope for the best
hopin' for the best is the national sport
say what you mean but hope for the best
hopin' for the best is the national sport
say what you mean but hope for the best
hopin' for the best is the national sport
say what you mean but hope for the best
i hope for the best, expectin the worst
don't know if i'm blessed, or if i been cursed
i hope for the worst, expectin the best
don't know if i'm cursed, or if i been blessed

I Missed The Boat
03:39
|
|||
sittin' on the dock of the harbor
starin' at the oil on the water
formin' pretty colors and patterns
like the rings round neptune and saturn
saw this great big passenger freighter
pullin out to sea a bit later
then i saw her face in the porthole
and it made me feel like an asshole - because...
i missed the boat like the unicorn
i missed the boat on the day i was born
i missed the boat but it's not so scary
i missed the boat but i caught the ferry
read the news today in the paper
bout some capsized passenger freighter
tidal waves had turned it upside down
like the famous ss poseidon
forty portholes broke in the motion
how'd they count them all in the ocean
then i read the list of who made it
and it made me sad and elated - because...
i missed the boat like the unicorn
i missed the boat on the day i was born
i missed the boat but it's not so scary
i missed the boat but i caught the ferry...

Broken Record
05:16
|
|||
a world-famous idiot savant
says you can't always get what you want
but he doesn't know me from brian
the liverpool all-boys choir
decide love's all that i require
but i need more iron in my diet.
the world goes round in circles as time slides reel to reel
i listen to the music keepin time to how i feel
guitars came in all shapes and sizes
some are striped, others checkered
this is the way world ends
this is the way world ends
this is the way world ends ... like a broken record
quoth a rather obnoxious young punk
gimme anarchy or gimme junk
can we safely assume he's forgotten?...
the king of all memphis sits back
on his toilet seat lonely and fat
beside the tv he just shot in
the world goes round in circles as time slides reel to reel
i listen to the music keepin time to how i feel
guitars came in all shapes and sizes
some are striped, others checkered
this is the way world ends
this is the way world ends
this is the way world ends ... like a broken record
another band waiting to break
pop the clutch as they jam on the brake
i guess they don't know what they're missin
and yet i await some reward
like the fencer the tip of the sword
it looks like i caught what they're pitchin
the world goes round in circles as time slides reel to reel
i listen to the music keepin time to how i feel
guitars came in all shapes and sizes
some are striped, others checkered
this is the way world ends
this is the way world ends
this is the way world ends
this is the way world ends
this is the way world ends
this is the way world ends...
